TSP Funds — What’s Inside & How They Behave
Plain-English overview of each fund, what it holds, and how it typically performs. Click any card to learn more on tsp.gov.
G Fund
Government Securities
What it holds: Special short-term U.S. Treasury securities created exclusively for TSP.
- Goal: Capital preservation — cannot lose value.
- Volatility: None. The only TSP fund with zero downside.
- Role: Safety bucket / dry powder for rebalancing.
F Fund
Fixed Income Index
What it holds: Broad U.S. investment-grade bonds — Treasury, corporate, mortgage-backed.
- Goal: Income + stability; tracks Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index.
- Volatility: Low–moderate; can dip when interest rates rise.
- Role: Diversifier vs. stocks; dampens portfolio swings.
C Fund
Common Stock Index
What it holds: The S&P 500 — Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and ~497 other large U.S. companies.
- Goal: Long-term growth from blue-chip U.S. stocks.
- Volatility: Moderate–high; tracks the overall U.S. large-cap market.
- Role: Core growth engine for most TSP investors.
S Fund
Small/Mid U.S. Stocks
What it holds: U.S. stocks not in the S&P 500 — the Dow Jones U.S. Completion Index.
- Goal: Higher growth potential from smaller companies.
- Volatility: High; can outperform or lag C Fund significantly year-to-year.
- Role: Satellite growth / diversifier alongside C Fund.
I Fund
International Stocks
What it holds: Developed markets outside the U.S. — MSCI EAFE (Europe, Australia, Asia).
- Goal: International diversification away from U.S. markets.
- Volatility: High; currency swings and foreign markets add risk.
- Role: Global exposure — tends to zig when C/S zag.
L Funds
Lifecycle (Hands-Off Mix)
What they do: Auto-rebalance a blend of G, F, C, S, and I based on your target retirement date.
- Idea: Starts stock-heavy, shifts more conservative as your date approaches.
- Good for: Set-it-and-forget-it investors who want autopilot.
- Note: Available in 5-year increments from L 2030 through L 2070.
Performance snapshot: Historically, stock funds (C/S/I) offer higher long-term returns with bigger ups and downs, while bond funds (G/F) smooth the ride. Most investors blend them based on risk tolerance and time to retirement.
